Following the decommission of the Coimbra Academic Association’s Centre for Aeronautics (Centro de Aeronáutica da Associação Académica de Coimbra – CAAAC), in April 1974 by unilateral decision of the Coimbra Academic Association (AAC), due to the belief that the Centre’s activities were not compatible with the guidelines and activities of the ACC, it was possible to retake the process started in the 16th of July 1957, by the “Comissão Provisória Organizadora do AAC” (AAC Provisional Organizing Commission).
At that date, this Commission had already invited a number of institutions, sport collectives and friends of sport aviation for a meeting, having delivered, pending approval, the Statutes defining the future of ACC to the General Direction for Civil Aeronautics (Direcção Geral da Aeronáutica Civil -DGAC), on the 22nd of August of 1957.
However, the following procedures were slow, since references to those same Statutes are still recorded in documents dating from 25thof March 1960. They were also resent to the DGAC on the 1st of April of that same year, showing that the ambition to found the ACC was delayed in favour of the founding of the CAAAC.
For these reasons, we can affirm that the Coimbra Aeroclub (ACC) was born out of the extinction of the CAAAC, having its formal constitution on the 14th of January 1976 as a Leisure and Sport Cultural Association, being named at that time “Aero Clube de Coimbra – ACC”, even if the necessary bureaucracy for its full constitution had begun in February 1975.
